Common Email Marketing Blunders To Avoid

Thanks to the Internet, many people who have been dreaming of owning their own business has now made this into a reality. Setting up a business online can be done almost instantly, regardless of your budget. No wonder why the Internet has now become the one-stop shop for anything and everything that you are looking for. But because it has been so easy for people to set up their businesses online, competition is a lot tougher now. Online business entrepreneurs need to come up with fresh ideas and strategies in order to entice people to visit their website and avail of their products and services. The presence of a lot of scam websites over the Internet posing as legitimate businesses has just made this task so much harder.

This is why online business entrepreneurs have begun using a variety of different Internet marketing strategies, many of which are based on marketing strategies that have been used for decades. The difference is that it is done electronically. One such method is the use of email marketing.

Business Entrepreneurs’ Views on Email Marketing

How email marketing is received by online business entrepreneurs greatly varies. There are some that see it as a highly effective means to tap to potential customers and clients to visit their websites and avail of their services and products. Others see it as just a waste of time, effort and money since most email marketing campaigns are immediately set back by email servers tagging these emails as spam and therefore unable to reach their target market.

As with any marketing strategy, the success or failure in using one is greatly based on how much you understand how the strategy works and how to manipulate it to your advantage. The reason why there are a lot of unhappy entrepreneurs in terms on how their email marketing campaigns have turned out is because they have unknowingly committed some mistake along the way, thus leading to its failure.

To make sure that this does not happen to you, here are just some of the common blunders business entrepreneurs commit when doing email marketing campaigns to help you avoid them.

Blatant Headings

Email servers have been now been designed to locate spam emails based on the heading that business entrepreneurs use on the subject line. Those that read “Great Discount” or “Buy one, take one” on the subject line are automatically sorted out and thrown into the spam folder where they will be more likely to be ignored by your target market. By simply changing the subject headings that you use, your email would be able to reach a lot more people. Learn to be creative!

Large Files

This is especially true if you are sending newsletters, brochures or catalogues. Having too many graphics and animations would cause your email to be sent to the spam folder. The ideal email to send to potential clients and customers should not exceed more than 2KB. There is nothing wrong with using graphics, but try to use compressed files of these graphics and sparingly.

Sending without Testing

Here is another common mistake made by online business entrepreneurs. To make sure that your email gets sent to your target audience’s Inbox and not the Spam folder, make sure that you first test this to your own email. Try sending the email to your personal email and see where it would land. If the email landed in your spam folder, chances are the same thing would happen when you send it out to your potential clients and customers. Another thing that you should test is whether or not the email content is created to spark the interest of your target market. Make sure that the font size you use is readable by the target audience you are trying to reach. The same holds true for the way how you construct the email content.

Too Much or Too Little Information

Potential customers and clients always have two things that they need answered before even bothering to visit your page: why should we buy it and why should we get it from you. Some online business entrepreneurs tend to provide very little information to answer these crucial questions. In other cases, online business entrepreneurs do the complete inverse. They provide way too much information that they overload their potential customers and clients with it. Either way, these would cause them to be discouraged and would rather ignore your email campaign efforts. Providing straight to the point information to the questions and inquiries potential customers may have is crucial. Link your email to your FAQ page or a customer inquiry form where they would be able to get just the right amount of information they need to convince them to avail your products and services.

Too Much Advertising, Too Little Products

Perhaps the most discouraging that could happen on the part of a customer is becoming extremely hyped up to buy your products only to find out that it is already out of stock. Before starting an email marketing campaign, make sure that you have just the right amount of stocks available. Having your customers wait for a day or two is still reasonable, but anything more than that would make your customers not only encouraged to look elsewhere, they may even think that your company is one of the many scams posing as a legitimate company.
